Forte S. Clemente was built in the 16th century by command of the Portuguese King Filipe II.
After being in ruins, it was restored in 1959 by D. Luis de Castro Almeida who started receiving friends who paid for their staying, turning it in a small “pousada”, one of the first of its kind.
The castle is now a private residence in one of the most beautiful and traditional fishing villages on the Costa Vicentina of the Alentejo.
